Did Yesterday Really Happen?

I woke up this morning and realized that yesterday….
1. Isiah Thomas was fired.
2. The Mets defeated the Phillies and Cole Hamels.
3. The Rangers ousted the Devils from the playoffs.
Wow. What a great day. I don’t usually have ones like that (given my choice of teams).

The Puck Keeps Bouncing

Lady Luck has been the theme of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal match up thus far between the Rangers and the Devils. Last night, the Devils scored three goals off fortunate bounces, including the game winner by John Madden in overtime, which bounced off of Marc Staal’s right skate. The previous two games featured goals on [...]

Game 1: NY Rangers 4, NJ Devils 1 (Rangers Lead Series 1-0)

For an objective recap of the game action, I refer you to the Associated Press article.
This was a tremendous game to watch, lots of hitting, lots of aggressive plays. Although the final score does not indicate a close game, it was in fact a one goal affair until very late. Sean Avery scored a [...]

Brodeur v. Lundqvist

The first round of the NHL playoffs are upon us and NY is buzzing.
Rangers v. Devils. Need I say more?
If John Davidson were still a Rangers broadcaster, and not running the St. Louis Blues, we’d get an “ohh baby” right about now. (Miss ya JD).
In anticipation of the best of seven series, there’s a lot [...]

Rangers vs. Devils Playoff Preview

For the second time in three seasons, the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils will match up in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. It wasn’t a pretty series for the Rangers in 2006, who were swept by the Devils in four games. This was the series where a collision between Jaromir Jagr and then-Devil [...]

Bryan Murray is a Lamoriello Wannabe

The Ottawa Senators fired their head coach John Paddock.
The Senators are in first place.
There are 18 games left in the season. The Sens are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games.
What?
Oh yea, and GM Bryan Murray named himself the head coach.
Copycat!
Maybe he took advice from Lou Lamoriello here or here…or maybe here.

Trade Deadline Grades

Today’s NHL Trade Deadline didn’t sell us short on drama and action. Lets hand out grades for each of the three local teams:
New York Rangers- D
The only reason that the Rangers do not get an F here is because they got rid of pitiful Marcel Hossa. Hossa was in and out of the lineup this [...]

What About Hockey?!?

In all honesty, I had never been “a blog guy,” before starting Big Apple Sports with Christian Chiavetta and Bill Slattery back in December.
We are now roughly two months into the site’s existence and I’m learning a lot about the blogosphere and the immense volume of sports blogs which I didn’t know existed. Without a [...]

Trade Deadline Approaching

February 26th is coming up fast in the NHL, so lets take a look at each local team and any moves that they might make.
New York Rangers
Usually the team that comes up in all big name trade talk, this trade deadline is no different. The Rangers have been looking for an puck-moving defenseman for the [...]
