I Like This Idea, Spread The Word

As has been told to us thousands of times this year, 2008 is “The Final Season” at Yankee Stadium.  The Cathedral will be closing its doors at the end of the year, giving way to the new Yankee Stadium that is being built on the other side of 161 Street.  I still don’t like this idea, as Yankee Stadium is my favorite place in the world.  But I’ve at least come to accept it.  What I have not accepted yet is that the House that Ruth Built will be torn down this winter, where it will be replaced by community baseball fields.  That does not sit well with me.  Apparently I’m not alone in this idea either, as another Yankee fan has started an online petition to save Yankee Stadium.  The website is http://saveyankeestadium.org/.

I strongly encourage all baseball fans, not just Yankee fans, to take a few minutes and sign this petition.  Realistically, it has a 0.64% chance of actually working, but it’s worth a shot.  I’ve had some of the best times in my life at Yankee Stadium and it will break my heart to look at the southwest corner of River Avenue and 161 Street and no longer see the greatest venue in the history of sports.  So please, don’t stop at signing the petition but pass it on to all of your friends, relatives, acquaintances, hell anybody you have ever talked to.  Again, the website is http://saveyankeestadium.org/.

Happy Birthday to Darrell Johnson, Sean Connery, Regis Philbin, Tom Skerritt, Anthony Heald, Rollie Fingers, Charlie Sanders, Gene Simmons, Elvis Costello, Tim Burton, Billy Ray Cyrus, Blair Underwood, Albert Belle, Todd Maschio, Rachael Ray, Claudia Schiffer, Marvin Harrison, Pablo Ozuna, Diego Corrales, Kel Mitchell and Justin Upton

  1. I agree Bill! This doesn’t sit well with me either. I’ve signed quite a few petitions to save our beloved ballpark. As I sit and watch the final game and it’s festivities, I want to cry knowing this great structure may be torn down. She deserves to stand proud in all her glory. I worked in the Yankee farm system as a batboy for a few years and met many great people, including The Boss – Big George Steinbrenner himself, and I have many great memories of this place. I can’t believe they won’t put it on the national parks registry or something as a historical landmark to put a stop to the tear down. Too much history and too much meaning to be rubble. Let’s keep getting the word out. Someone is bound to hear us. I love the fact that they’ll tear down the most historical building built in the 1900’s but put some unknown “hole in the wall” building on a preservation list…

  2. i totally agree with both of you. I have been a die hard Yankee fan since i was five years old my best memories are going to Yankee Stadium eating a hotdog with my dad and listen to him tell me all the great stories of the legends from The Great Bambino to Lou Gegrich, Whitey Ford, Joe Dimaggo, The Boston Massacre, The Called Homerun, The Greatest Football Game Ever Played. Then witnessing for myself Don Mattingly, Bernie Williams famous catch in the World Series, Jeter’s amazing diving catchs, Tino Martinez, Aaron Boone’s walkoff homer, ARod’s 500 , Rivera becoming the best Closer ever and so on and so on i have signed the petition but can not find anymore would love to do whatever i can to help so please post any other petitions you find so all of us lifelong baseball fans can sign. Regardless it is a historic landmark and we can not let them tear it down.
