Sizing Up the Mock Drafts

When I did my mock draft on Thursday, my goal was to correctly pick 25% of the first round. In other words, I wanted to nail 8 picks. I knew my mock was limited, because I did not attempt to forecast trades. I knew that trades would take place, but they are so hard to predict I likely would have swung and missed on every single one. So I set 8 out of 31 as my watermark for my first ever mock draft. Well, I fell just a little short of that as I only accurately called 7 selections. But like everything else in life, success is relative. I kept a list of five other mock drafts by football writers, so I could see how I did in comparison to them. While seven was just below my goal, it was also tied with or better than each of the football writers in their mocks. Here’s how many those guys got right:

  • Don Banks, Sports Illustrated – 6
  • Peter King, Sports illustrated - 4
  • Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN – 7
  • Todd McShay, ESPN – 5
  • Pat Kirwan, NFL.com – 6

So I’d say that getting 7 correct is pretty good. Here are the picks I called correctly:

  • #1 Miami – Jake Long
  • #2 St. Louis – Chris Long
  • #4 Oakland – Darren McFadden
  • #6 New York Jets – Vernon Gholston
  • #14 Chicago – Chris Williams
  • #22 Dallas – Felix Jones
  • #31 New York Giants – Kenny Phillips

Happy Birthday to Samuel F.B. Morse, President Ulysses S. Grant, Rogers Hornsby, Enos Slaughter, Jack Klugman, Lee Roy Jordan, Cuba Gooding Sr., George Gervin, Rosanna Scotto, Jason Whitlock, Chris Carpenter, Pedro Feliz and Joey Gathright
